Wicklow is the 17th largest of Ireland's 32 traditional counties by land area, and the 16th most populous. It is the fourth largest of Leinster's 12 counties by size and the fifth most populous. Bray is the biggest town in County Wicklow. It is known as the Gateway to the Garden of Ireland and is the longest established seaside town in Ireland. It is only 19km (12 miles) south of Dublin and is reached by DART, Train, Bus or the N11 road. There is a safe beach of sand and shingle to walk on and there is a spacious esplanade.

The 1920's and 1930's saw the building of numerous orange-tiled bungalows which appear to be peculiar to east coast resorts. They are of little architectural distinction but they add colour to suburban Bray. Since 1960 the town has doubled in size, although the extent of the growth has been obscured by the pleasant wooded environs.
